Well once again August was here and Jennifer’s longed for Garden Party was upon us. The weather was glorious yet again, in fact it was a sweltering day well up in the ninety’s and not a cloud in sight.
The day had started early in Jennifer’s and Roland’s home, already a lot of preparations had been done with the gazebo erected, tables and chairs out, colourful umbrellas up, flags decorating the summer house. There were tables around the edge of the garden laden with bric-a- brac, all kinds of books for people to browse through, a large selection of indoor and out door plants for sale for the keen gardeners. The table had already been set with the urn gently hissing away with cups ready for the first arrivals requiring tea or coffee. There was a lovely fruit basket all ready on the table for the lucky person who was going to win it. Also, I must not forget that by the fountain was a large toy Gorilla with an appealing face, which sat and waited patiently to see which person was going to be lucky enough to have him grace their home. The garden looked a picture with the sound of running water coming from the fountain in the middle all making it a perfect setting for the day’s events. Wandering down past the gazebo and into the orchard I found a tent had been erected for those who had brought children with them to keep them amused. A line was there for gently used clothes for sale, and beyond, under the apple trees, I was glad to see our old friends the ornamental pigs Mum Priscilla and her babies Pinkie, Perky, and Percy and that is where I found the home grown produce of marrows, runner beans, tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers and blackberries - always a much sought after and popular stall.
I went back into the kitchen to see how Jennifer and her Sister Linda and daughter Tracey were getting on. There was a wonderful aroma of sausages cooking in the oven, and the kitchen table was covered in assorted cakes from chocolate to Victoria sponge, fruitcakes, and individual cakes and buns. They were all very tempting, guaranteed to add inches to the waistline.
All was set to be a very enjoyable day.
It was not long before people started to drift in, and Linda was there with a welcoming cuppa, and the garden was full of people chatting and laughing. Time was spent with people browsing and looking to see what they could buy. People made for the homegrown produce, which Lynn ran along with her two friends. Pat was doing a marvellous job along with her friend Brenda getting people to buy raffle tickets. Soon the morning had whizzed by and it was time for lunch. Nicky and her daughters did a grand job of being waitresses and delivering the ploughman’s with great speed, which every one tucked into with relish. The only hiccup we had was when they were looking for some one called Lorraine to deliver her lunch. Well, I thought I do not remember any one with that name. Then we discovered I had written Quiche /Lorraine and they had thought it was to different people, so that did cause a laugh.
We had nearly finished lunch when Dr Wojtulewski and his wife arrived much to every ones delight. He and his wife spent time going around chatting to all the members and friends. He visited all the stalls and was tempted especially by the home produce, and cakes. It really was lovely to see him at a venue of ours where he was not having to treat us as patients, and he could see us laughing and enjoying ourselves.
The whole day was well worth the effort and I would like to say a very big THANK YOU to all those who helped, from setting up to manning stalls and to all those on the catering side, also to those of you who donated Raffle prizes, bric a brac, books, home produce and cakes. Also we could not have done it without those who came and supported us. Thank You
Lastly I would like to say a big Thank You to Jennifer and Roland for holding it in their home. We hope you will allow us to come again next year.
Thank You All
Jacqui
